The White Cliffs Hotel, a boutique place in the little village of St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe, just a short walk from the beach at St. Margaret’s Bay, is an absolute gem in this part of the country. Convenient for Dover – and by far the best option if you need to overnight before or after catching a boat – and a lovely holiday base in its own right, it offers a warren of rooms in a large, typically Kentish clapboard house and a number of smaller weatherboard cottages across the courtyard. For groups the family apartments and spacious loft apartment (with three bedrooms) are a good option. Though they differ in size and style, all rooms are contemporary and fresh, with free wi-fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms – some of those are a little bijou, but it’s all part of the character. There’s a welcoming small bar and fine restaurant downstairs, a garden at the back, and use of the spa facilities (£10/day) at their sister hotel, the venerable Wallets Court. Standard rates include a good buffet breakfast (you’ll pay an extra fiver for a full English), with good-value dinner, bed and breakfast options available. The vibe is so relaxed, the owners and staff so very welcoming, that this seaside hotel becomes your home from home within minutes. Be warned – it can be difficult to leave.
