- 5 Guest Rooms & Suites
- Restaurant with Rooms
A well-established Southwold restaurant with rooms, Sutherland House occupies one of the town's most historic buildings, indeed James II slept in one of the upstairs bedrooms and its all-round creakiness makes it one of the most characterful places to stay in this genteel resort. It's well located too, bang in the middle of the high street and a short walk away from the seafront and Southwold's wonderful pier; you're also in the thick of the town’s shops, restaurants and pubs.
The building is a quaint old place, full of beams, ornate ceilings and big fireplaces. Yet Sutherland House's 5 rooms boast all the comforts you need, with good tea and coffee, complimentary water and fresh milk in a minibar fridge, Hypnos beds, Freeview TVs with DVD players and good wifi. The top floor room is a large suite, and there are 3 rooms on the first floor, including one small double and a couple with big standalone baths as well as showers, plus a ground floor double with a walk-in shower and its own patio. There’s no parking, there are plenty of free spaces around town, including some on the street right behind. Split between a cosy beamed main room and a small bar area, the restaurant focuses on fish and seafood, although some sort of meat dish is usually on offer too, and the overall experience is close to fine dining but not quite. It does however get busy so you need to book a table to be sure of eating here.
