A beautifully situated, very well-equipped South Cornwall hotel, spa and resort.

Set on a splendid private estate of lawns, mature woodland and a private 9-hole golf course above the lovely River Helford, this is not simply an engagingly traditional country house hotel. With a huge swimming pool and intimate little spa, it is also the perfect choice for families – both nuclear and multi-generational.

We love the way you can choose between sitting by an open fire, in the conservatory or even on an outdoor terrace; and the variety of public spaces (several lounges, cocktail bar, snooker room) mean that there is plenty of room for everyone, even on a wet day.

We also adore the huge pool, which is another great place to while away a wet afternoon; it also has an open fire and sauna, as well as a little terrace with a hot tub. There is a small spa, where skilled staff have created an innovative ‘Healing with the Seasons’ range of treatments and spa days using natural ingredients and ensuring the body gets what it craves at key times of year. Their spa menu changes with the seasons so there’s always something new to try. There are also a range of Elemis facials and organic treatments using the Made for Life Spiezia range and sunrise yoga sessions in their riverside studio. A great way to start the day.

The hotel is half way a refurbishment programme, with half the rooms completely updated in a much more contemporary country house hotel style with lush new bathrooms and walk in showers. Breakfasts are abundant and traditional, with hot dishes cooked to order, and lunch and dinner can be either a formal occasion in the restaurant, or a more casual one in the cocktail bar. There is also a children’s tea daily at 5.30pm.

In short this is a hotel with facilities galore that enjoys a special South Cornwalll location not far from Falmouth, at the end of the scenic estuary of the Helford river. It's a good place for both romantic couples and families, and also has a number of self-catering cottages and holiday homes available.

The Owner Says

We like to think Budock Vean is a bit of a hidden gem. Tucked away by the Helford River it's an oasis of peace and quiet. If you're searching for somewhere to get away from it all then this is the place. You'll feel you've left the hustle and bustle of everyday life far behind. But there's a wealth of things to do here if want to – golf, swimming, spa treatments, tennis, croquet on the lawn, coastal walks, stunning gardens to explore, kayaking on the river or taking a boat trip to explore Frenchman's Creek (which inspired the story by Daphne du Maurier). To explore another part of Cornwall that's well off the beaten track just catch the foot ferry across the river to Helford Village, Gillan Creek and Manaccan. But then again you might just want to curl up in the lounge by the fire with a good book and do nothing!

Our favourite room

We love enjoying a cream tea on the sun trap terrace where you'll often be joined by a friendly robin fond of a few scone crumbs. It's a great spot for lunches with friends where you can enjoy the view across the golf course greens and down to the garden.

Bedroom 51 has been completely updated (along with a third of our bedrooms) in a contemporary style and has a wonderful double aspect view over the golf course and down across the gardens. Our Suite is very much in the country house style with a four poster bed and separate lounge with views over the garden.

You can order a picnic and wander through our garden down to the river and enjoy lunch looking out at the boats on the water – or hop on one of our regular boat trips to explore the river aboard the 'HannahMolly'. It's a great way to see the stunning beauty of this part of Cornwall.

The local area

The Helford is a wonderfully rural part of Cornwall and very connected to the river. Even in the height of summer it still feels quiet and unrushed. The pace of life ebbs and flows with the tide. Just 6 miles and a 15-minute drive from Falmouth you can be in the hustle and bustle of this busy harbour town and all it has to offer, but then meander back through the country lanes to the tranquility of the Budock Vean for birdsong and the rustle of the breeze in the trees. It's a great place to relax, unwind and recharge your batteries.

Best local places to eat and drink

There's lots of lovely places within a 10-minute drive or a short walk. The picturesque Ferryboat Inn is just down the road, the cafe and tea rooms at Trebah and Glendurgan gardens are also 10 minutes along the road and accessible without having to purchase a garden ticket. A little further out is The Waymarker cafe towards the village of Constantine and the Cove Restaurant at Maenporth beach. Again, just 10 minutes away in the car.

But with a varied lunch menu and an evening dinner menu that changes daily to reflect our chef's use of the best local produce – you can always just stay here!

Why stay with us?

Budock Vean is an idyllic place to really get away from it all. There's lots to do on site and in the immediate area if you want to be busy, but equally it's fine to just sit in the lounge, drink coffee and read a book or pamper yourself in the spa. We think we offer a perfect escape from day to day life. Come and discover us for yourself soon.
