Welcoming pub with rooms in picturesque St Mawes, with stylish accommodation and seasonal Cornish food
Sitting in the heart of St Mawes overlooking the pretty harbour and Roseland Peninsula, the Rising Sun is a pub with well-appointed rooms in a particularly lovely spot. With the river on one side, the sailing waters of the Carrick Roads on the other and quaint village streets just moments away, it's a top base for exploring the south coast of Cornwall and beyond.
Owned by St Austell Brewery, there are all the ingredients you want from a coastal pub: a relaxed atmosphere, glorious views, plenty of drinks to choose from, and a menu that combines classics with seasonal dishes and local produce. Meanwhile, the outside terrace is the place to book when the weather plays ball.
Upstairs, the 11 en-suite rooms have a 'comfortable boutique bolthole' vibe, with categories including 'Standard Double', 'Accessible Double', 'Deluxe Suite' and 'Premium View'. The 'Family' option has a double bed and two singles, while the duplex 'Apartment' comes complete with two super-king bedrooms and a lounge. Go for a sea-view space if you want to make the most of the setting, or a dog-welcoming one if you're bringing your pooch (there's a £20 charge, but it includes a hamper filled with treats).
Each room comes with luxury toiletries, tea- and coffee-making facilities, WiFi, a hairdryer, an iron and a TV, and all stays include a full breakfast. Lovely extras are thrown in, too: an OS Explorer map, and a postcard of the scenic area to send back to family or friends, plus dry robes, if you fancy going for a swim.
There’s plenty to recommend in and around St Mawes itself. Indeed, The Telegraph named it Britain’s loveliest seaside village in 2025. Wander down to the harbour, take a ferry across to Falmouth or explore the historic castle. The surrounding peninsula is criss-crossed with coastal paths, making it ideal for walking and cycling. One thing to bear in mind: the Rising Sun doesn't have its own car park, but there are public pay-and-display spaces beside the pub. Once you’ve arrived, you can happily leave your vehicle behind and get out on foot, two wheels or by boat.
