Cliveden
Just a twenty-minute drive from Windsor, for blow-the-budget classical opulence, it don’t come much better than Cliveden, a hotel that’s also a national treasure, with a £9 National Trust levy for guests. The 19th century mansion has been the haunt of monarchs, film stars and 60s call girls (it kickstarted the Profumo Affair). The rooms are antique-strewn and the grounds vast.

Great for all the family
Lovely walks, gardens and now somewhere to play for young kids too. Enjoy the Orangery for afternoon tea.
