B&Bs that stand out from the crowd in Keswick are not that easy to find – chintz still clings on for dear life in this corner of England – so the Ellergill Guest House is a real find and a real bargain. It's also a very peaceful place to stay, located down a quiet cul-de-sac yet only a minute's walk from the centre of town; and they also have parking for each room, so you can leave your car keys in your pocket while you're here. There are four en-suite rooms in all, each of which has big splashes of bold colour and a contemporary feel; two are standard doubles and two deluxe. You get more space (and bigger beds) in the two deluxe rooms. They all have flatscreen TVs with Freeview, DVD players, hairdryers, tea and coffee-making facilities and biccies, plus there's wi-fi throughout. Bathrooms have showers and complimentary toiletries. Meanwhile, friendly owners Robin and Clare Pinkney are a mine of information on Keswick and the surrounding area, and can fill you in on the best hikes and local attractions.
