Two ravishingly updated country properties set on their own estate in the Yorkshire Dales
Hidden away in a remote corner of the Howgill Fells, in the lesser-known, Cumbrian slice of the Yorkshire Dales, Brownber Hall and House may just be the country houses you have been dreaming about. These two properties, recently renovated by London refugees Peter Jaques and Amanda Walker, both make for about as comfortable a country retreat as you could wish for, run by a welcoming couple who are in love with this beautiful region and everything it has to offer – from the gorgeous walks on the doorstep to the stunning countryside views.

Grade-II-listed Victorian Brownber Hall dates from 1860 and has eight bedrooms, two sitting rooms, a brilliantly equipped modern kitchen and a dining room with space for 16. It retains original features galore – tiled fireplaces, wooden floors, stained glass windows, and William Morris wallpaper – which combine beautifully with the couple's artfully eclectic rugs and kilims, shabby chic sofas and other furniture rescued from local antique shops and bric-a-brac markets. Bathrooms in the master bedrooms are spacious, sleek affairs with underfloor heating  and powerful rainfall showers. The house comes with everything you need: the sitting room features a wood-burner, and there's also a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.

Brownber House is the Hall's more diminutive neighbour, with room for up to 8 people in 4 bedrooms, and slightly more recently decorated by one of the architects responsible for Soho House. It has the same country-chic feel as its big sister, with a very comfortable sitting room with a wood-burning stove and a connecting, equally well-equipped kitchen and dining room. There are four beautifully furnished and decorated double bedrooms, all with en-suite luxurious bathrooms. The house also has its own garden, with a barbecue, fire pit and outdoor seating.

Some of artist Peter's art collection lines the walls of both houses but otherwise the feel of both houses is very deliberately that of the home of your luckiest countryside friend, with a cosy yet contemporary feel. Bedrooms have large windows and beautiful country views, and are individually decorated with antique furnishings, Moroccan rugs and soft throws and inspired contemporary metal work created by a local blacksmith. At both Hall and House you’ll find a welcome hamper of freshly-baked sourdough, homemade marmalade and cakes and biscuits waiting on arrival, and fridges can be pre-stocked with local produce if arrange in advance. They'll even prepare dinner on your first night if you have  a long drive in store, and the same goes for breakfast hampers and picnic lunches – Peter and Amanda love to cook and in fact did it for a living in a previous life! They are also always full of advice on the best local walks, pubs and other activities, which include everything from walking and biking to wild swimming or a trip to the local nature reserve; and bike rental is available for a modest extra fee.

Both houses are perfect rural retreats in every sense – situated in a scenic and rather underrated part of the country, which also happens to be handy for both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, but also providing the ideal environment to relax. Highly recommended!
