Goodies Farmhouse

On the edge of the glorious Howgill Fells and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, only a short drive from the Lake District, Goodies Farmhouse is the holiday cottage that really has it all:  stunning mountain scenery, luxury interiors that combine contemporary amenities with traditional features, plus it's easily located just 6 miles from the M6. A beautifully converted stone Elizabethan farmhouse with a terrace and large garden, it sleeps six lucky people in perfect comfort, with the high fells on view and and a cosy, luxurious feel indoors. And if you're looking for somewhere smaller, the same owners also rent a blissful romantic retreat for two – Bluebell Cottage – nearby.

Clasped within a wooded valley but within view of the open countryside of the Fells, the house is warm, welcoming and luxurious without being ostentatious. With an acre of garden and woodland, it's a perfect country retreat – a peaceful, get-away-from-it-all sort of place with plentiful walks on the doorstep. It has been superbly – and sensitively – restored to a high standard, with oak floors, open fires,  period furniture and rugs and bookcases all adding to a an overall cosy feel. The oak-beamed living room has a couple of blissfully comfy Duresta sofas arranged around the fireplace and a 50″ Smart TV, plus a dining area with a 16th-century oak refectory table and eight carved chairs. There's more comfy seating next door, where the stone and glass conservatory looks out over the hills – a perfect place to daydream and watch the day go by. The farmhouse kitchen is equipped with granite worktops, a NEFF electric double oven and gas hob and pretty much ever other appliance you might want, along with a small table and chairs and an inglenook fireplace with cast iron stove. The terracotta tiled floor and oak beams just add to the atmosphere while a useful utility room houses a microwave, large fridge-freezer and washing machine. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two of which have comfortable Vi-spring king-size beds: one has its own en-suite bathroom, another, smaller bedroom has a hand-carved oak bed and antique oak furniture. A third has twin beds that can be linked to make a  large double. Outside there is a terrace with a table and chairs, barbecue and more mountain views.

The house is so delightful, and the grounds so large, that it would be easy to arrive here and not do much at all apart from explore the immediate surroundings – there is a lovely walk straight from the door down to the river Lune and more challenging hikes up onto the high fells. There's information in the house on the best walks for guests, many of which you will have to yourself, enjoying the fells, woodland, meadows and rushing river, as well as all sorts of wildlife – deer, otters, peregrine falcons and other rare birds abound. Further afield, there are also a couple of lovely towns that it would be a shame to miss while you're here - the delightful 'book town' of Sedbergh and the nearby market town of Kirkby Lonsdale – not to mention any number of country pubs and the nearby attractions of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.
