Not many people know about the bit of the Yorkshire Dales National Park that's in, er, Cumbria. But in fact this is one of the national park's most alluring and in some ways undiscovered corners – home to some dramatic countryside and with the added benefit of being within easy distance of the Lake District as well. This collection of country cottages is well named, then, not only for its location in the beautiful Eden Valley but also because it's really the perfect spot from which to enjoy this glorious enclave of northern England. It's easy to get to – despite its isolation, you're just a few miles from Tebay Services and the M6 – but its location at the end of a private lane feels wonderfully remote and restful.
A Corner of Eden consists of three holiday properties: The Farmhouse which sleeps 8, a barn conversion – Angel Barn – which sleeps 6, and cosy Shepherd’s Cottage, which is a small perfectly formed retreat for two. All of the cottages are dog friendly – indeed they recently won the i newspaper's 'Dog-friendly Accommodation of the Year' award, not only because it's a perfect place for dogs but also because the cottages are so comfortable and well appointed. The largest property, a stone Georgian farmhouse, has a spacious yet extremely cosy sitting room, a dining room with an open fire and enormous oak table and a large kitchen with a range cooker, fridge and dishwasher; a generous locally sourced welcome hamper with champagne is waiting for you on arrival, and complemented by an honesty bar stocked with local goodies in the old dairy. There are four spacious bedrooms with king-size beds upstairs and a walled garden with comfy garden furniture and a barbecue for alfresco summer feasts, while the super-fast wifi, bluetooth speakers and TV and DVD they have installed help to make rainy days more tolerable. Angel Barn displays the same sort of comfort levels and is very eco-friendly, with a ground-source heat pump, PV panels and sheep's wool insulation. It sleeps 6 in 3 en-suite bedrooms with super-king-size beds, and has a wood-burning stove and its own hot tub, while lovely Shepherd's Cottage is as romantic a country retreat as you could desire, with an Aga and wood-burner and a four-poster super-king-size bed. It also has a cast-iron bath in its private garden for enjoying a soak under the stars!
Finally the location is as good as it gets, with no less than 3 (dog-friendly) pubs within walking distance - the Fat Lamb, which is just a 10-minute walk away across the fields, and two pubs in Ravenstonedale village, three miles away, including the excellent cosy gastropub, the Black Swan. The quaint yet bustling market town of Kirkby Stephen is a short drive away, and there are any number of great walks on your doorstep in the lush Eden Valley and the Howgill Fells to the south. Owners Debbie and Richard rescued what was a derelict farm here almost 15 years ago and have put a lot of time and energy into making it the beautiful country retreat it is now. We're so glad they did - and we're pretty sure you will be too!
