Max and Susan Fischer (along with Fischer's head chef Rupert Rowley of nearby Baslow Hall) own this handsome, thoughtfully modernised village pub, and chef Craig Skinner has won over locals and tourists alike. Interesting plates of food are nicely presented and the menu changes regularly. Dishes might include goat's cheese panacotta, baked puy lentil moussaka with griddled oregano flatbread or black pudding sausage with champ, air dried ham and hen's egg. The pear and almond tart is a triumph, the creme fraiche sorbet eye-rollingly pleasing. Service is informed, friendly and efficient without being intrusive. Local beers include Galaxia from Bakewell brewer Thornbridge, and Black Sheep Best Bitter. There's plenty of room upstairs and down and the contemporary open kitchen is a talking point. With a sat-back vibe and the papers to read, it's a great spot for lunch before you pop up the road for a tour round magnificent Chatsworth House.
