If you want to stay somewhere a little bit off the radar on your trip to the Cotswolds, the Five Alls is perfect place, located in the tiny village of Filkins (around a 10-minute drive from Burford) and well-placed for the offbeat, undiscovered picturesque countryside hereabouts. It's the second Cotswolds baby of Sebastian and Lana Snow, who gained quite a reputation for food at the the Swan in nearby Southrop and before that ran a successful restaurant in southwest London before moving here in 2012 (they have also recently opened the excellent and slightly smaller Plough in Kelmscott and The Bull Hotel in the Cotswolds town of Fairford).
The Five Alls' nine rooms (four in the original building and five in outhouses) have been completely refurbished and are cosy, well-decorated and comfortable, with quirky local artwork, throws from nearby Cotswolds Woollen Weavers, flatscreen TVs, high-quality mattresses and duck-feather duvets; one of them is large enough for a family and the bathrooms are smart and have posh toiletries. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are welcoming and helpful to all. The main draw to the Five Alls, however, is the unmissable food. Menus change regularly but some of our favourites include chargrilled country toast with girolles mushrooms and poached duck egg and crab, chilli, garlic and parsley linguine. Make sure you leave room for the equally inventive sweets – choose from melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fondant with Horlicks and Baileys ice cream or juicy kiwi, melon or raspberry sorbets. Take time to explore the nearby church and village (home to an outdoor swimming pool), but be warned you need a car to make the most of the surrounding countryside in all its glory.
