A welcoming pub with six boutique bedrooms on the edge of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds

The name of this glorious riverside pub is not a coincidence. Tucked away on the edge of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, on the upper reaches of the River Thames, it's exactly the sort of place you might catch a trout, or at the very least eat one, and even if you don't you'll be glad you came. Recently refurbished by the local Butcombe Brewery group, its six beautiful boutique bedrooms make for a perfect base to explore this peaceful part of the Thames Valley and the Cotswolds.

Whether you choose to stay or not, it's a stonking location, popular with walkers, boaters and jaded Londoners hoping to discover a different side to life on their favourite river. You could come here for a few days and never set foot in your car, enjoying instead the peace of the river, the multiple walking opportunities nearby, and of course, all the delights of the pub itself, which serves good food and has a large beer garden. You're also within easy reach of William Morris's house at Kelmscott Manor, the nature reserve at Chimney Meadow and picturesque Bampton, which stood in for the local village in the TV series Downton Abbey.

The pub's six rooms are set slightly apart from the main building in a quiet courtyard and have been beautifully refurbished, with antique furnishings, fine linens and blankets and king-size beds. They all have en-suite bathrooms, good WiFi, Smart TVs and tea- and coffee-making facilities, and some have private terraces and are dog-friendly (with beds and bowls provided); a couple can also convert to twins.

Facilities

Life in our corner of Oxfordshire flows at a peaceful pace, much like the upper River Thames, so we know a thing or two about relaxation. Each of our six newly refurbished boutique rooms can be found tucked away in a quiet corner of our courtyard, and has been designed to provide elevated luxury with vintage furnishings, vegan and environmentally friendly British bath and body products, rain showers or claw-foot tubs, and comfortable king-size beds. We’re happy to accommodate dogs in 3 of our rooms.

Nearby

If you are looking for a relaxed, family day out, look no further than Chimney Meadows. It is the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust’s largest nature reserve, and its fields are part of an ancient landscape, created by the Thames and shaped by centuries of farming. Blenheim Palace is a must-see British attraction. Situated on the edge of the Cotswolds in Oxfordshire, it is known as ‘Britain’s greatest palace’. Known as the city of dreaming spires, Oxford has been a seat of scholars for 800 years, housing Britain’s oldest university, as well as museums, libraries, galleries, and a vibrant food scene.
