Relaxed inn with rooms in the heart of Hope Cove, with comfy bedrooms, sea views and first-rate food, plus sandy beaches and the South West Coast Path within easy reach
Tucked into a pretty little seaside village in South Devon, the Hope & Anchor is the type of place that makes you want to put on your walking boots, switch off the phone and stay a while. Sitting just above the shore in Hope Cove, with two sandy beaches and the South West Coast Path close by, this St Austell Brewery-owned pub with rooms was refurbished in 2021.
The setting of the 18th-century former smuggler’s haunt is a big draw: Hope Cove is a small, traditional fishing village in South Hams, where narrow lanes lead down to the water and the landscape opens out towards Bigbury Bay. The Hope & Anchor sits right at the heart, with the beach just a stone’s throw away and the coastal path virtually on the doorstep.
Inside, the pub has a warm, welcoming feel, balancing character with cosiness – think beamed ceilings, stone walls and warm tones. Settle in after a day outside, or grab a seat on the water-facing terrace when the sun comes out.
Upstairs, the 12 en-suite bedrooms are stylish and comfortable, with a choice of 'Standard Double', 'Signature View Double', 'Standard Family' and 'Premium View Double'. The décor is contemporary, and there's everything you may need, from luxury toiletries, a TV, and tea- and coffee-making facilities to an iron, WiFi and a hairdryer. Some rooms are dog-friendly, and breakfast is included with all stays. There's a £20 fee per pooch, but a hamper with treats, biodegradable poo bags and a tennis ball is included.
Food is another strong point. The kitchen showcases local South West produce, combining classic pub favourites with seasonal dishes. Of course, seafood features – plates such as locally landed whole catch of the day, grilled half-shell scallops, and miso prawn crumpet with lobster butter. There’s also a varied selection of beers, including several by St Austell, plus wines and cocktails.
You’ll discover plenty to do beyond the front door. The South West Coast Path runs alongside Hope Cove, opening up some outstanding walks along the cliffs and around the surrounding headlands. Make your way towards Thurlestone in one direction, or Palmers Point Lookout and Soar Mill Cove in the other, or simply potter around the village. Salcombe is nearby too, just a 15-minute drive, while the wider South Hams offers rolling countryside and hidden bays.
