Clifftop inn with rooms perched above Porthminster Beach, with spectacular St Ives panoramas and stylish sea-view rooms
Nestled 30 feet above turquoise waters, overlooking St Ives Bay in Cornwall, the Pedn Olva has one of those locations that does much of the talking for itself. There are sea views from almost everywhere, golden sand at Porthminster Beach below, and the bustling town is just a stroll away. Recently refurbished in 2025 by St Austell Brewery, the laid-back waterside inn makes the most of its exceptional setting.
Inside, the bar and restaurant are light and contemporary, while outdoors, grab a seat on one of the sun-soaked terraces. If you fancy catching a few rays, choose a lounger, with umbrellas for shade if you prefer. On a warm afternoon, there are few better places in St Ives to settle down with a spritz – they have their own range (our favourites are The Passionfruit and The Limone) – and enjoy a long lunch while watching the waves roll into the bay. But saying that, it's just as lovely at breakfast time and sunset.
The 26 en-suite bedrooms have had a thoughtful refresh – modern and comfortable, with luxury toiletries, WiFi and tea- and coffee-making facilities. But the real draw is what’s outside the window: some categories – 'Signature', 'Premium' and 'Deluxe Suite' – look directly over the shimmering coastline. There are also 'Cosy Cabin', twin, dog-friendly and family rooms (sleep four), making the Pedn Olva a versatile base for a Cornish escape.
And then there’s the food. The menus combine pub classics with contemporary favourites, focusing on seasonal ingredients and local produce. Freshly landed seafood features alongside meat from South West farms, while the bar serves St Austell’s award-winning beers, alongside a wide selection of wine, cocktails and spirits. Breakfast is included for guests, from Full English and eggs benedict to vegan overnight oats.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly placed to explore St Ives and the surrounding area. From the Pedn Olva, it’s a short walk into the town centre, where narrow streets tumble down towards the harbour, independent galleries and craft shops fill the lanes, and the beaches are never far, from Porthgwidden to Porthmeor. Tate St Ives is a 10-minute stroll away, and the Barbara Hepworth Museum is even closer. You're also just moments from the train station, where Carbis Bay is the first stop. The brief ride is super-scenic, or you can get there on foot in half an hour.
For walkers, the South West Coast Path goes in both directions. Spend the morning following a trail, stop for a swim, then retreat to the Pedn Olva's terrace. Or simply stay put – the view is good enough to justify doing very little at all.
