Stoke Park
UK England South East England Buckinghamshire Beaconsfield
This sprawling country club is notable for its starring role in several movies – from Bond villain Oddjob decapitating statues with his bowler hat in Goldfinger to Daniel Craig being shot on its steps in the final scene of Layer Cake. In truth it's less a den of glamorous espionage these days than a smartish hangout for affluent home counties golfers and corporate types escaping London for a mini-break – as Bridget Jones and Daniel Cleaver did in the rom-com Bridget Jones's Diary. You arrive along a long driveway which winds between the fairways – beware low-flying balls – before depositing you outside the 18th-century mansion. The hotel is divided between this building, with its traditional country house frills and swags, and the large modern Pavilion 50 yards to the west, where the rooms are decked out in 1960s pop art and racy film posters. As well as the 27-hole championship golf course and 350 acres of Capability Brown-designed grounds, there are extensive leisure facilities, including indoor and outdoor tennis courts (used by pros in the run-up to Wimbledon), and a lavish gym, pool and spa.
