Middlethorpe Hall
UK England North East England North Yorkshire York
This stunning 17th-century house is now owned by the National Trust, but rather than feeling like a tourist attraction Middlethorpe manages to exude stunning loveliness. With its elegant antique furniture and fine paintings they've gone for the feel of private manor house rather than hotel, with grounds and gardens to match – the private 20 acres are manicured to perfection, and are good for a stroll after a candlelit meal in the highly regarded restaurant. There are ten classically elegant rooms and suites in the house, with the other 19 ranged around the handsome courtyard – these tend more towards contemporary country house in style. All have soothing outlooks over gardens, lawns or courtyard. Guests also get use of the spa – pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpool bath. Lie back and think of England's stately homes – every stay benefits the National Trust.
