The Fort is York’s very first boutique hostel, offering classy budget accommodation in the heart of the city, with rooms individually designed by young local artists, winners of a competition launched by the hostel’s owner. Each is wildly different and dramatically presented, from contemporary cabin to a funky room covered in graffitied deep sea creatures; another shows off hundreds of quirky photographs of York. There are dorm beds and private twin/double rooms in this building, and more beds in apartments next door. Each also has an en-suite wet-room and designer bedding. A little kitchen-chill-out area with free tea and coffee, microwave, fridge and toaster takes care of the munchies, while the associated bar-restaurant downstairs, Kennedy’s, is good for anything from breakfast to late-night drinkies.
