The Open 2020

The 149th British Open Golf Championship is coming down south next year (2020), when returns to the Royal St Georges Club in Sandwich for the first time since 2011. It makes for a great excuse to spend some time not just at the golf but exploring what is an undeniably beautiful part of Kent. Many of the best options are in nearby resorts like Broadstairs and Whitsable, or south and west towards Dover and Canterbury. Kent & Sussex Cottages
These guys have put together a bespoke collection of cottages suitable for the Open, and their truly-local team will help you find your perfect cool place within a 20-mile radius of Sandwich to serve as base camp for seeing the golf.

The Duke William
Owned by Mark Sargeant, former head chef at Claridges, this country  inn just a few miles west of Sandwich has 4 super-comfortable rooms and serves superb food in the downstairs bar and restaurant – everything from scotch eggs with caper mayo, and mussel popcorn to pork belly with peas, broads beans and black pudding.

Surrounded by 12,500 acres of ancient woodland and pasture, Green Farm is home not only to a very comfortable award-winning barn conversion, it also has a unique spa and  sauna and a couple of 6-person outdoor hot tubs, as well as treatment rooms offering everything from deep tissue to hot stone massages – perfect for easing the pain after a long day standing in the Gallery at Sandwich.

Driftwood Beach House

Run by affable hosts Jez and Michelle Hills, this comfy beachfront B&B on the outskirts of Whitstable has 3 beautifully furnished double rooms, all with comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms, smart TVs and ultra-fast wifi fast wifi,  and one has its own hot tub. They also have a self-catering property next door, The Boathouse, and it's a short walk from the brilliant Sportsman pub – regularly voted Britain's best place to eat.

One Wavecrest

With a prime location right on the beach in Whitstable, just a short stagger from the Old Neptune pub, this is the ideal place from which to enjoy the best of Whitstable – a lovely house, full of light, comfortably furnished and very welcoming.

Alkham Court Farmhouse
One of our favourite B&Bs in this part of the world, this place recently won a 'Beautiful South' award for 'Best B&B, and quite right too! With 4 guest rooms, we reckon it's one of the most luxurious places to stay in this part of southeast Kent. If only all B&Bs were like this!

The Gate House
A near neighbour of Dover Castle, the Gate House offers a unique opportunity to stay in a miniature Neo-Gothic castle – great for a retro romantic break for 2-4 people and only x minutes drive from Sandwich.

House of Agnes
Situated in a Grade-II listed historic house in the centre of Canterbury, said to be mentioned in ‘David Copperfield’,  this well-run, friendly boutique B&B was featured – and highly praised – on Channel 4's 'Four in a Bed' series, and has 9 quirky guest rooms in the main building and and 8 in the converted stables outside.

A Secret Garden
Fancy something different? This tiny cabin hideaway on the outskirts of Canterbury has its own private and very secluded garden, with a hot tub and comfortable king-sized pocket sprung mattress tucked into the framework of a wooden pod complete with glass walls and glass ceiling. YHA Canterbury
The budget choice but a good one, with a choice of multi-bedde and private rooms with en-suite bathrooms as well as glamping options in the grounds. It's very comfortable, with a dining room and lounge, and you can stay here from £10 a night. Why pay more?

Bramley & Teal
These guys manage a very wide range of properties in some must-see spots, with a choice of properties in Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Whitstable.

Seascape

Perched high on the clifftop above the sumptuous sandy beach at Minnis Bay, on the north Kent coast, Seascape is a fabulous detached house with dramatic views of the sea from every window. A large property, with room for 10–12 guests, it's perfect for big groups, who can congregate and enjoy the sea views together from the hot tub in the garden.
