The ultimate Dartmoor escape for jaded big city types.

Weeke Barton is the ultimate Londoners' escape from the big city, since that's exactly what its owners, Sam and Jo, did several years ago, when they threw it all in and moved down here from trendy east London. It's a long way from Hackney, for sure, a big, thick-walled stone longhouse that has been here 500 years and they hope will be here another 500, still providing the kind of place any London escapee would be happy to pitch up at. There is a studied naturalness to the place that almost enforces relaxation – stylishly decorated rooms with big comfy beds and natural stone en-suite bathrooms with posh toiletries; a lounge with squishy sofas and magazines; a cosy snug with honesty bar; and a dining room equipped with a big slate table at which they serve a civilised-hours breakfast (with their own Dartmoor granola) and an excellent home-cooked dinner on request.  The property is also set in its own five acres of grounds so there is plenty of room to properly relax and enjoy the amazing night skies. There is free wifi and Sonos music systems, but interestingly no TV reception – just flatscreen TVs on which you can watch a choice of DVDs from their extensive library. There's also a local pub that does decent food, and dog are welcome in all rooms if you can manage to keep them of the beds. All in all, it's a fabulous place from which to explore Dartmoor or to just kick back and relax.

Open all year.

Double rooms £110–£130.

Beautiful property but our 4 night stay was very disappointing. Our greeting as we arrived was an order to go round the back of the property. On arrival we were told the house rules which were too overwhelming after a long journey. The majority of communication with owners Jo and Sam was via text, not what we expected, especially as they were living on-site. We reported an unpleasant smell in the bathroom, via text, and did not receive any response. It was only when we checked out that they told us they were dealing with this on-going problem!! The house rules were written down in bar and bedroom but were sometimes misleading. Breakfast had to be ordered via text every morning, 10 minutes before arrival, so it was difficult to request other options. The breakfast menu choice was limited to 1 cereal (granola), cooked breakfast and toast. There was no other options on the menu, which we expected at this property e.g. porridge, muesli, berries, pastries. For evening meal - the website and menu stated that they would try to make amendments where possible. It was difficult to know what was on the menu as this was not available until 2 weeks prior to our arrival (another rule). We requested fish and chicken for evening meals but the menu sent through 2 weeks prior to our arrival did not include either so we had to book restaurants and taxis. In summary, the owners are living their dream and the guests have to fit in with their method of working and their communication skills left us feeling unwelcome.
