Mill on the Exe
South West England Devon Exeter
- From £100 a night
- 11 Rooms
- Pub with Rooms
South Devon pub with rooms beside the River Exe, combining waterside tranquillity with easy access to Exeter’s cathedral and lively quay
A short walk from Exeter, but feeling a world away from the historic centre, the Mill on the Exe boasts a lovely position by the water. Next to Blackaller Weir and the Millstone footbridge, you can simultaneously enjoy a riverside retreat and city break.
The setting is the first thing you'll notice, with the river and surrounding greenery creating a peaceful backdrop. There’s a generous terrace, while inside, the pub was given a smart makeover in 2024 by owners St Austell Brewery. It’s equally suited to a lazy pint or a long lunch after a morning out and about; the outdoor seating is particularly inviting when the sun's out.
Transformed into a pub in 1983, the 11 en-suite bedrooms are situated in Headweir Mill House. Choices range from 'Standard Double' and 'Family' to 'Signature View' and 'Deluxe Suite'. Whichever you opt for, character combines with modern comforts, including air conditioning, mini fridges and WiFi. Some are dog-welcoming, and breakfast is included with every stay.
The food menu focuses on hearty classics, contemporary plates and seasonal local flavours, with dishes designed to suit everything from a casual meal to a celebratory dinner. Drinks-wise, the list offers a selection of St Austell's award-winning ales, plus wines, cocktails and spritzes.
There’s on-site parking – handy, given Exeter itself is close enough to explore entirely on foot. Visit the magnificent cathedral, wander its medieval streets and underground passages, browse the independent shops or make your way to the Quayside, less than a 15-minute stroll away. There’s a mix of culture, history, restaurants and watering holes, while the surrounding Devon countryside gives you plenty of options for escaping the city altogether.
