The county town of Lewes, with its handsome streets, Norman castle and splendid South Downs setting, is one of Sussex’s loveliest towns, and The Corner House is one of the town’s best B&Bs. There are just two (smallish) rooms, beautifully decked out in patchwork quilts, silk rugs and characterful antique furniture, each with a bookshelf crammed with interesting books, maps and guides, and a luxury en suite (the West room comes with bath, the East just with shower). Both rooms are on the first floor of an Edwardian terrace, on a quiet residential street that’s just a ten-minute or so walk from anywhere you might want to venture; free off-street parking is a bonus, as anyone who’s ever attempted to find a free parking spot in Lewes will attest. But the biggest draw of the place, as is always the case with the very nicest B&Bs, is the owner, Benetta, who’s super-friendly and a mine of information about Lewes and the area. This is one of the town’s most popular B&Bs, so book ahead if you can, especially if you’re hoping to come to Lewes’s justly famous Bonfire Night celebrations.
