Striking decor and a focus on sustainability at this converted barn in Pembrokeshire

Zinc at The Long Barn offers a unique, ultra-stylish and memorable place to stay, set in nine acres of picturesque grounds, tended to over the last three decades. Situated in Pembrokeshire on the edge of Haverfordwest, the eco-friendly, dog-welcoming property was thoughtfully converted by the owners, keeping its rustic character while fusing with modern amenities and striking interior design.

Awarded 5* by Visit Wales, The Long Barn is divided into two: Zinc, with three bedrooms sleeping up to six, and Cedar, with two bedrooms (you can hire them separately or exclusively).

With Zinc, the original, pre-conversion corrugated metal roof forms an impressive statement wall and gives the barn its name, with scaffold, reclaimed wood and neon lighting also featuring. Meanwhile, a full-height print of The Milkmaid by Vermeer will no doubt catch the eye. It’s completely eclectic, but totally works, and means there’s always something to look at – whether you’re relaxing on the Chesterfield in the slate-floored, open-plan living space with the wood-burning stove keeping you warm, or sinking into bubbles upstairs, in the freestanding bath of the luxurious super-king bedroom.

Bi-fold doors in the lounge open to an enclosed garden, complete with a covered BBQ area with a table and benches, meaning seamless indoor-outdoor living. Back inside, the kitchen/diner is uber-stylish, with navy units, a Belfast sink and a six-seater table.

Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor. One has a unique scaffold-pole king-size bed, with French doors opening to the private garden, and an en-suite with a rainfall shower. The second is home to a pair of single beds and a reclaimed desk. On the first floor, as well as the third bedroom, you'll find a spacious family bathroom with a tub and a rainfall shower, plus a mezzanine lounge.

When it comes to eco credentials, The Long Barn is virtually zero-carbon: heating and hot water are provided by solar panels and a ground-source pump powered by electricity from renewable energy suppliers.

Throughout your stay, you're welcome to explore the scenic grounds: woodland, fields and ponds. Beyond the property, if you can bear to leave, Haverfordwest is less than 10 minutes away by car. Drive north to the Preseli Hills, south to Tenby, and west to the beaches of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, including Newgale and Broad Haven.

There are 9 acres of grounds to explore including woodland, stream and pond areas. There is a waymarked circular walk, together with 3 picnic benches and seating along the way. Play field where the younger ones can kick a ball around, together with 3 larger field areas. Please note that we sometimes have sheep on site - these get rotated around the fields - but dogs must be on a lead if with the sheep.

Suitable For

The properties are best suited to couples, young families, extended family groups and friends going on holiday together.

There is a stair gate, high chair and travel cot in each property.

Pets are allowed - as a rule 2 in Zinc, but rules can be broken. Please enquire.

Accessibility:

The king bedroom with ensuite shower, and the twin bedroom are on the ground floor. The rear door has sloped access for wheel chairs.

Our grounds extend to 9 acres with woods, stream and pond. A circular walk with several picnic tables and benches enable you to fully relax on site.

For action we can recommend Coasteering, Wakeboarding at Wild Lakes, Surfing at Newgale and Sea Kayaking.

Beaches we love Newgale, Fresh Water West and the twin beaches of Barafundle and Broad Haven South.

Places to visit would be St Davids, Solva, Tenby, Pembroke and Narberth.

The Owner Says

We moved to Pembrokeshire nearly 30 years ago and never want to leave such a beautiful place. The Long Barn (split into Zinc and Cedar ) was created by ourselves from a run down derelect barn on our smallholding. It was rebuilt sustainably, with a ground source heat pump sited under our water meadow, repurposed corrugated zinc used for feature walls and fencing and old timbers used to create doors, shelving and tables. With a love of design, Karen designed all the interior and exterior spaces, featuring vintage finds and showcasing special family items. You will find glass lamp shades, Singer sewing machine, copper coal scuttle and old brass dinner gong from grandparents. Vintage items have been repurposed imaginatively: a milk cooler as a lamp, wooden tool boxes as side tables, a gas bolier as a plant stand and a large gear wheel as a chandelier. Outdoors is a very important part of Pembrokeshire life, so both barns feature a fully enclosed garden with a covered bbq area for family time, even in inclement weather.

Guests are welcome to use the 9 acres of grounds that we have developed over the years. There is a large pond/lake, with seating and picnic bench beside. The trees and shrubs we have planted are maturing nicely, with many unusual varieties such as tulip tree, red oak, great white cherry and swamp cypress. Planting has been developed to create interest all year round, with spring bulbs, wild flowers and autumn shrubs and trees with excellent autumnal colour. We have created a circular walk around the pond, alongside the stream and through the meadows and woodland. There is always something to see or hear. You might be lucky to see the kingfisher, buzzards or red kites, or even to enjoy the bats come evening time - we have a bat detector that you are welcome to borrow!

Karen misses the children, now they have left home, so she enjoys making treats for guests welcome instead. You might have lavender shortbread, rosemary and garlic jelly, lavender and oat bath soak and mint and parsley dog treats, all featuring products from our garden. She enjoys displaying seasonal flowers from the garden too in old vintage bottles and stoneware pots.

Our love of Pembrokeshire and Wales is shared too, with a coffee table book of Pembrokeshire scenes from local photographer Drew Buckley and local art work on the walls. Hopefully, by the time you leave, you'll love Pembrokeshire and our little slice of paradise too!

Getting There

From the Bridgend Square Roundabout on the A40 on the edge of Haverfordwest, head towards Prendergast on the B4329. After almost half a mile, turn right on to Cardigan Road (staying on the B4329). Turn right again almost immediately on to Shoals Hook Lane and then left at the T-junction. Continue to follow Shoals Hook Lane, under the A40, for about half a mile until you reach The Long Barn.
