Contemporary West Coast of Scotland self-catering with views across the water to the Isle of Mull
The sleek and contemporary PilotHouse offers self-catering for two in a scenic location on the shores of the Sound of Mull. There’s just a mile or so of water between here, Mull itself and the PilotHouse, a property inspired by the conning tower of a submarine that looks as though it may have just come up for air. It’s tempting to call this unique place a cabin, but with riveted aluminium walls, it’s not as rustic as that implies. You could refer to it as a ‘tiny home’, but as the accommodation is spread over two storeys, it’s not even that small. ‘Holiday home’ is the other option, but frankly, that sounds far too twee. Whatever you call it, there’s no denying the PilotHouse is a real one-off.
It was built by architect Roderick James and designer Amanda Markham as one of three stand-out places to stay in a four-acre plot on the very edge of mainland Scotland. PilotHouse, in particular, offers spectacular views thanks to the first-floor living space and the balcony that wraps around its curvy walls. That being said, fabulous outlooks are a big feature of the others, AirShip and Captain’s Cabin, too.
PilotHouse is elliptical, with a spiral staircase and corrugated aluminium weaving its way around the interior walls. The industrial look is cleverly softened, making it a comfortable place to stay. The ground floor contains the bedroom, bathroom and study, where you'll find more timber than aluminium. They’re painted in soothing creams and light RAF blues, with upholstery and bed linen to match. The colours, like everything in here, have been carefully chosen and develop the pilot theme. Upstairs, the open-plan living space is warmed by a log burner and combines a kitchenette, diner and lounge, with plenty of space to relax. Notably, there’s no TV – but why would you want one here?
Books, conversation and the view out the window are all the entertainment you’ll need. And those panoramas will no doubt tempt you out to explore. You can walk through the woods to Drimnin Bay, and kayaks and bikes are available for hire on site. There’s a whisky distillery on the neighbouring Drimnin Estate and ferries to take you to Mull from Lochaline, where you'll find shops and places to eat – just half an hour’s drive away, connected by the single-track road that leads to this tucked-away place on the far western shores of Scotland.
