A unique, tiny home overlooking Mull in a stunning location on the West Scotland coast
Airship 002 looks like it’s drifted in and landed in a fortuitously scenic waterside spot overlooking the Isle of Mull. In fact, it’s all very deliberate: this tiny architect-designed and built holiday home, with carefully designed interiors, makes the most of a very well-chosen spot. From the outside, it’s all aluminium and glass – a capsule-shaped cabin with huge windows at either end and portholes in between. From the inside, these give views of the water from wherever you are in what is a cosy, open-plan bolthole for two.
This was the first of three cabins designed and built by architect Roderick James and designer Amanda Markham, in this very special location. It’s a four-acre plot overlooking the Sound of Mull, almost as far west as you can be on the Scottish mainland. Very often, those who stay in this cabin return to try the others: PilotHouse and the Captain’s Cabin. Each is a unique design, but all share an industrial aesthetic and a sense of connection to the outdoors – felt through the outlooks they all offer and underpinned by their sustainable credentials. Energy is renewably sourced, water is from a spring, there’s electric car charging, and a commitment to simple living.
AirShip 002 doesn’t offer its guests a TV, and why would you need one?! There’s a Roberts radio, WiFi and a log burner instead. It’s an open-plan set up with a seating area at one end and a bed and a desk at the other, with a simple but stylish kitchenette, bathroom and more seats in the middle. There’s aluminium inside as well as out, but also a lot of wood. That, and the fact it’s insulated, has warm lighting and the log burner, makes it feel cosy no matter what time of year you stay.
This is a place to relax and watch flames flicker, boats sailing by, and on a clear night, sit out and enjoy the stars. Many people spend most of their time right here, only venturing out on the woodland walk to Drimnin Bay. Some go further to the Nc'Nean Whisky Distillery, and others take the ferry to Mull, which sets sail from Lochaline, half an hour’s drive down the road. Lochaline is also the destination for the closest shops and a good meal, with The Whitehouse restaurant coming highly recommended to this secluded and romantic self-catering place to stay.
