An architect-built holiday home on Scotland's West Coast with views of the Sound of Mull
Tigh Darach is a beautifully designed, oak-framed house that makes the most of its setting on Scotland’s West Coast. The open-plan living space – the heart of this home — and the wrap-around verandah outside between them offer views across the water to the nearby Isle of Mull. It’s a water’s edge location, but backed by woodland as well. You're just as likely to see deer and pine marten as you are to spot dolphins and seals. It's a charming house in an enchanting spot, and makes a great base for a family or group of friends who want to explore Mull and the West Coast.
There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms, so plenty of space for six, and dogs are welcome too. There’s a real homely feel to it all, but one that’s at the high end of the scale for a holiday cottage. That may be because architect Roderick James and interior designer Amanda Markham created this for their own family to use. The furniture feels as solid as the building’s exposed beams, and everything inside is in keeping with them. It's eco-friendly too, powered by solar panels and heat pumps, and extremely well insulated, making it warm and toasty even when the heating isn't on.
This is a house of unpainted or whitewashed timbers and nature-inspired objets d’art where colour is sparingly used – except in the kids’ bedroom. Here, colourful vintage Disney posters adorn the walls of the only twin in the property. It’s accessed via a secret door hidden behind a bookcase in one of the two ground-floor doubles. The master sits up a flight of stairs that leads off the kitchen-living-diner. It's here – if you're not outside – where you’ll likely spend most of your time: a lovely space with a log burner, underfloor heating, and a wall of glass to help you enjoy the view.
It’s a short walk down to Drimnin Bay, and kayaks and bike hire will be offered to you after booking. If that’s not to your taste, the nine acres the house sits in neighbours the Drimnin Estate, where there’s a whisky distillery you can visit. Lochaline, a half-hour drive away, is the place to head for if you want more than a drink: The Whitehouse restaurant offers fine dining, and a good village shop has supplies if you want to cook for yourself. It's also where you can board the ferry to take you over to Mull.
