Perched right on the wild, wind-whipped tip of Portland Bill, this extraordinary cottage offers something far rarer than just a coastal escape – it’s a stay inside a piece of living maritime history. Linked by a long corridor to the Grade II-listed Old Higher Lighthouse, Stopes Cottage is one of those places that feels genuinely cut off from the everyday, where the soundtrack is the sea, and the sky seems to stretch on forever.
Sleeping up to four guests, the single-story cottage is simple, well-equipped, and quietly characterful. There's a cosy double bedroom and a light-filled twin, both with wash basin facilities, alongside a family bathroom and a living space with an electric fire. The kitchen-diner is well equipped for slow mornings and relaxed evenings, though it’s the views – rolling out across the Jurassic Coast – that steal the show, especially from the south-facing rooms.
What really sets this place apart, though, is its connection to the lighthouse itself. Guests have access to the tower and its observatory, where you can climb the narrow steps and take in breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of sea, sky and rugged coastline. Outside, the grounds are just as appealing. Discover a lawned garden with ornamental fishponds, a patio for al fresco dining, and even a heated outdoor pool and Jacuzzi for warm Dorset days. Add in off-road parking, peaceful surroundings and a sense of complete seclusion, and it’s easy to forget the rest of the world exists.
The setting is undeniably dramatic. Portland Bill is known for its rugged beauty and big skies, with coastal paths leading off in all directions and the Jurassic Coast waiting to be explored. Weymouth is just a short drive away when you fancy a change of pace, but most guests find themselves happily staying put, soaking up the stillness and the ever-changing seascapes.
