Just half an hour from Cardiff, The Fox and Hounds is an attractive base from which to explore the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, whose 14-mile path runs west from nearby Aberthaw to the seaside resort of Porthcawl. The dog-friendly bar is a cosy spot to relax with a beer after a walk, particularly if you can bag the antique settle next to the wood burner. Outside, a terrace overlooks 13th-century St Cadoc’s Church, noted for its recently uncovered and restored medieval wall murals; it is one of many listed buildings in this time-passed, rural village, which is now a conservation area. However, most visitors come to The Fox and Hounds for the food. Lunch and dinner menus are not extensive but local, seasonal produce is turned into the likes of Rosedew Farm Beefburger topped with Welsh Cheddar, or Wild Mushroom Arancini. Sunday lunch, which includes a fish dish and vegetarian options, is always popular and Warm Spiced Pear Cake with Perl Las Cheese and Port is a must-taste dessert. There are some decent Burgundies on the above average wine list too. Accommodation consists of standard doubles, larger double/twin rooms and a superior double which has a sofabed suitable for children under 12; all are decorated in cottage style and equipped with tea and coffee, homemade biscuits and bathrobes.
