Headlam Hall has all the elements for a relaxing stay in the Durham Dales. It’s a country house hotel between Barnard Castle and Darlington, with comfortable bedrooms, a cosy bar, a great restaurant and well-tended gardens — not to mention its golf course and spa. The list of facilities is one that you might expect from a large hotel in the hands of a corporate giant, but this place is family-run and has just 38 rooms. It’s one of the reasons we like it so much. Stay here and when you’re walking in the walled garden, eating dinner in The Orangery or swimming a few lengths of the pool you experience a sense of fortunate exclusivity that befits the elegant surroundings of this 17th-century mansion house.

Bedrooms range from the spacious Lord Gainford suite in the main house, with its four-poster bed and garden views, to the light, airy and modern rooms above the spa. There are dog-friendly options too: if you’re coming with a pup or two, we’d suggest one of the rooms in The Mews which offer direct access to the outside. Or, perhaps, for something slightly different, you might want to try the self-catering Hideaway. Whichever of the hotel rooms you opt for, you’ll find a flatscreen TV, free Wi-Fi and tea and coffee making facilities with Molton Brown toiletries to top it all off. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, head downstairs in the main house for modern British food served in The Orangery or, in warm weather, out on the patio. The Library Bar offers a cosy place for a drink or a less formal place to dine that’s dog friendly too.

Spa and golf breaks are available, or you can pay a small additional charge to access the spa facilities, which include a 15-metre pool, a sauna, steam room and gym as well as treatment rooms and café. With all this on site, there’s little reason to go off exploring, though you’re well placed should you want to. There are lovely walks in Teesdale, and Barnard Castle, with the fascinating Bowes Museum, is only a few miles away. The Yorkshire Dales are half an hour’s drive; while the coast is about an hour away. Headlam Hall is well placed for visiting all of this — but equally well-placed for doing nothing at all.
