Pentre Mawr Country House, Llandyrnog, Denbighshire LL16 4LA

An old country house that has been kitted out to provide every luxury

Poised in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Pentre Mawr Country House is a romantic hideaway with a variety of accommodation options. First and foremost there's the refurbished manor house with three superior rooms, each boasting double Jacuzzi bathtubs and elegant four poster beds. While, for those wanting to step it up a level, the neighbouring gardener's cottage boasts the most modern rooms in the establishment. Here, two contemporary en-suite doubles have the same TV, DVD, fridge and coffee machine facilities as the main house rooms, but the bubbling hot tubs have been shifted out onto a private terrace, a magical place to spend an evening. With stylish bathrooms inside and private terraces outside, guests always have their own space and are spoilt for choice when it's time to kick back and relax. That said, there is one way to escape even further from the world, heading under canvas in Pentre Mawr's safari tents. These glamping hideouts offer that out of africa experience mixed with the inevitable concoction of lavish luxury and comfort. Inspired by owners Bre and Graham's trips to Africa, guests enjoy underfloor heating, king-sized beds and, yes you guessed it, a private terrace with an outdoor hot tub. Safari glampers also still have access to the main house and the swimming pool in the walled garden. With Liverpool and Manchester less than an hour to the east, Snowdonia to the west and the welsh coast to the north, Pentre Mawr Country House can also claim a top location to boot.

Equipped with everything you need, the safari tents can sleep two people each, with room for one extra bed if requested. Tents feature: ensuite bathrooms with free standing bathtubs, tv/dvd fridge, kettle, coffee machine, hair-dryer, super king size bed and a terrace with sun loungers and a private hot tub. Guests have access to all the hotel facilities with a bar in the drawing room and the conservatory restaurant, along with gardens, a heated outdoor swimming pool and Pentre Mawr's 200 acres of woodland, parkland and river. Richard, the resident falconer, has three hawks and an eagle owl. Guests can join him for a hawk walk. You will be introduced to a bird which then follows in the air performing its acrobatics, returning every now and then to your gloved arm. It is a fascinating display and an excellent one-on-one session.

Suitable For

Adults, groups, dogs and glampers - yes. Children under 12, tents, caravans, campervans - no.

For the best local walks Offa's Dyke (01547 528753) is certainly a popular pick, climbing the hills that stand proudly around Pentre Mawr the route offers fantastic views. If you'd like a guide then Bre and Graham can also set you up with Joe Cooper, a local chap who has a passion for health and fitness along with excellent knowledge of the area. Those with an interest in history should try Conwy Castle (01492 592358), Plas Newydd (01248 714795) or Denbigh Castle (01745 813385), just 3 miles away, while for many the obvious calling is the coast, half an hours drive. If you manage to tire of the local walking then Snowdonia National Park (01766 770274) also makes for an excellent day trip with some of the country's most demanding peaks.

Food & Drink

Prices include dinner, bed and breakfast, though if you would prefer bed and breakfast only, just get in contact. Meals are cooked in the hotel by Bre and Richard themselves, excellent cooks who have previously won AA dining awards. Served in the conservatory restaurant, diners can enjoy wonderful views while they eat. If you're looking for a night or two elsewhere then try the White Horse (01824 790582) or Kinmel Arms Tavern (01824 790291), both a mile away in Llandyrnog, with that true village pub feel. The Tefnant Inn (01745 730636), also nearby, is becoming one of the top spots for grub nearby and comes recommended by the locals.
