Annie’s Cabin offers wonderfully sustainable self-catering stays in an idyllic setting a couple of miles from Ludlow and within easy distance of the Shropshire Hills. Designed and built by a small team, including welcoming owner George, this Finnish-style cabin is genuinely unique. It’s a real log cabin, with each log hand-scribed to make cosy, organic walls. The design ensures living in comfort as close to the outdoors as possible. There’s a light, airy feel throughout, with triple-folding doors opening onto two covered verandahs from where you can really soak up the spectacular surroundings.

The cabin sleeps four in two bedrooms (a double and a twin), with space for two more on a living room sofa bed. It’s a good size for family holidays and couples who want to get away together, and is suitable for wheelchair users too, thanks to wider, step-free doorways and a wet room with handy grab rails. The same attention was paid to making it a sustainable place to stay: the water is heated by the sun when it shines, the electricity is from a green provider and the very logs it’s built from were sourced only 60 miles away.

It’s kitted out with everything you’d expect from a holiday cottage. The Shaker-style kitchen is well equipped, plus there are outdoor cooking options in the fire pit and cob pizza oven. The living space offers WiFi, a flatscreen TV and DVD player, a guitar, games, books and maps. Then beyond its triple-folding doors lies the stunning two-acre meadow. A gently-flowing river runs around the plot, forming a wildlife corridor that, from time to time, may introduce you to otters, badgers, foxes, herons, kingfishers, woodpeckers, or owls in the surrounding trees.

Ludlow – well known for its foodie scene – is just two miles down the road. Stock up on the finest Shropshire produce here courtesy of a farm shop, two whole food shops, a delicatessen, a fortnightly local produce market, three supermarkets, and a popular brewery. Or if you fancy eating out, Csons comes highly recommended by your host. As for activities, this stretch of the Welsh Marches is great for walking, in and around the Shropshire Hills, Mortimer Forest, and the Teme Valley.

Facilities

Annie's Cabin has a double bedroom, a twin bedroom, and a double sofa bed in the living area, so we describe it as sleeping 4+2 - the sofa bed is very comfortable, but the living area has large areas of glass high up, which have no curtains or blinds, so sleeping in the living area is best for good sleepers who don't mind some natural light. It's a self-catering log cabin (log walls inside and out) on one level throughout, with a wet room and wide doorways. There's Wifi, a TV, games and books, but poor mobile reception. The cabin is set in a two acre field with the Ledwyche Brook running round it, and the market town of Ludlow is two miles away.

Suitable For

We're very sorry not to allow pets.

Nearby

This last winter (2023/24) has been unusually wet, so at the time of writing the cabin field is muddy and uninviting, but normally it's a great place to explore the river bank, sit about, and cook outdoors.

Food & Drink

Csons Green Cafe in Ludlow is brilliant for breakfast or lunch, and they occasionally open in the evenings. If you like fish, there's the Angel - a lovely upstairs room in what used to be a Hotel, slightly more expensive, main meals £20-30. Or for pub grub, there's the Queen's. Best to book up for both of these. Apart from that, we're slightly out of touch with eating out, but there are plenty of other options. There's a slightly obscure and inconspicuous parlour pub, the Dog Hangs Well, in Ludlow - it's  small, doesn't allow mobile phones, and only deals in cash, which tends towards a feel of genuine local community that welcomes strangers if it's not too crowded. The Boot, at Orleton, is also great for beer and its garden.

Open

Annie’s Cabin is open for long weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) over the winter from November to May, and for 6-night stays from May to November.

Pricing

3 nights from £350, 6 nights from £650.

The Owner Says

A chance to experience the feel of a proper log cabin, built with sustainability in mind. It's designed to connect with the outdoors in summer, while being cosy in winter. Ludlow manages to keep a lively, independent air about it in an age of internet shopping, and this part of the Welsh Marches is great for walking - I'm a keen hillwalker - after 35 years I'm still making new discoveries.

Getting There

From the A49 between Shrewsbury and Hereford, on the outskirts of Ludlow there are two roundabouts. At the southermost one, exit on the road signposted to Caynham. Follow the road for about a mile, through a small hamlet, until you come to a T-junction. Turn left here, again signposted for Caynham, then after about 50 metres turn right under a large oak tree. The track divides, take the right-hand fork down to the cabin.

Ludlow train station has connections northwards to Church Stretton, Shrewsbury, and Manchester, southwards to Hereford, Abergavenny and Cardiff. Various bus links also from Ludlow.
