Cool Places
Number Ten Wine Bar & Kitchen
Lady Street Lavenham Suffolk CO10 9RA
Lavenham has any number of places to eat and drink, from cosy pubs to high-end restaurants, but this place is one of the best – and, despite being very central, it's just tucked away enough to be off the beaten track of the many tourists who descend on this beautiful timbered old town every summer. Situated in an creaky old 15th-century building on the corner of historic Water Street, just down from the Market Square, it's a good place just for a drink, with a pleasant timbered bar with huge fireplace out the front (very cosy in winter), in which you can lean against their massive barrels and get to know the locals. Beyond here a proper restaurant serves a small, moderately priced menu of hearty Modern British dishes (think ham hock with homemade picallili followed by Blythburgh pork belly or fresh mackerel) that is locally sourced and always includes a veggie dish; they also serve a pizza and pasta menu on Sunday evenings. Presided over by friendly owners Jo and Rod, it's both a relaxed and atmospheric place to eat, and they have a wonderful B&B suite upstairs in case you feel like making a night of it. One of Lavenham's hidden gems.
