Izakaya used to be called Hi Sushi but has had a recent makeover, perhaps to put a bit of distance between it and chain Yo Sushi outlets. Fair enough, for this is a proper Japanese-staffed restaurant – admittedly part of a chain, but a small one. Sushi is the main pull, with a credible selection of nigiri, sashimi, signature rolls and hand rolls, but they do decent ramens, too, and lunchtime bento boxes. They have also introduced charcoal-grill skewers, perhaps with an eye to the success of Jin Kichi, up the road on Heath Street – which, it must be said, is a superior restaurant if you can get a table.
