The Malvern Hills’ wooded flanks rise spectacularly from the plains just to the southwest of Worcester – a quintessentially English landscape, and one that inspired the composer Edward Elgar, who was born in the hamlet of Broadheath. The hills are famous for two things, the splendid medieval charms of Great Malvern’s Priory Church and the steep but easy-to-follow footpaths that pattern the area, especially North Hill, making it a particularly good region to visit with a dog in tow. Located in a well-heeled area on the western side of the Malverns, just 3 miles from the priory, Colwall Park Hotel is an excellent base for exploring this beautiful region, its good-looking half-timbered façade sheltering a warm welcome and 22 light and bright, individually decorated very comfortable rooms, most of which are dog friendly and provide beds, bowls, towels and treats to their lucky occupants. Not only that, the hotel’s restaurant is excellent, serving delicious food at affordable prices in an area where good restaurants are at something of at a premium. The hotel’s reception has walking packs detailing various routes, one of which starts from the hotel – pick up a packed lunch to take with you at the same time!
