The Crown is a proper, down-to-earth country pub, serving both the community and tourists to this beautiful apple-growing area of Herefordshire. And although it serves great food, don’t dare call it a gastro pub. Matt and Annalisa Slocombe bought it in 2007 and the whole family runs it. Given the location, it’s no surprise the bar stocks 26 ciders and perries, including the inn’s own King’s Cider. Chef Pete Brewin ably fulfils Matt’s brief for unpretentious, delicious food – popular choices include Cornish fish and chips, Cider steamed mussels and award-winning Sunday lunches – and pizzas from a new wood-fired oven are served al fresco. There’s a big bar, blackboards, real fires, traditional pub tables, a dartboard and a small porch called Pond Life, so called says landlord Matt because that’s where the misbehaved hang out. Out front the Crown has a public terrace, tables and gardens and there’s a car park at the back, while Matt and Annalisa also rent out an extension that comfortably sleeps 14 and is connected to the pub by a secret door. It's rented through Airbnb but don't let that put you off… it really is a fabulous property, with 5 bathrooms to go with its 7 bedrooms, several lounge areas, a garden with a barbecue, games room, huge kitchen/diner and a secret door leading into the bar. And can you think of any other self-catering property that is attached to its own pub? We can't!
