The New Inn, St Owen's Cross

UK England West Midlands Herefordshire

When Mark and Julie Green bought the New Inn 5 years ago, it needed substantial TLC. Fortunately, that wasn’t a problem. Mark had already given it his heart as the first pub he ever drank in, and this 16th-century coaching inn just outside Ross-on-Wye is now back from the dead, with a superb bar, restaurant and little snug for private parties. It still maintains a traditional look, all beams and plaster, but is cleaned up and classy, with stripped back light oak beams instead of dark olde-worlde ones, and 3 very chic bedrooms, with cosy throws and robes, ultra-comfy beds, wifi and Smart TVs, tea-and coffee, and one with a wow-factor glass-walled bathroom and free-standing bath, very romantic. The new New Inn is that sort of place – a pub for grown-ups (there's no kids’ menu) with are 21 wines by the glass and a great choice of ales, bespoke cocktails and an enormous list of gins. Food, too, is top-notch – think orchard pork, wild sea bass, blackberries souffle… – and as well as the modern rustic dining room there's a lovely secret terrace to enjoy it al fresco, too.

Double rooms from £150 a night including hearty breakfast.
