A charming shepherd’s hut between the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons National Park
Countryside views and a soothing soundtrack of birdsong and the baas of sheep make Cromwell’s Hideaway a lovely place to get away to. It’s a shepherd’s hut for two situated on a prime patch of Monmouthshire – one that Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed in, back when the borderlands of England and Wales were disputed. At that time, the army’s horses were stabled here, but nowadays, this is a much more peaceful place — and the shepherd’s hut occupies the most tranquil spot of all.
It’s tucked away beyond a pond, and although it feels far off the beaten track, it’s relatively easy to get to and well-located for exploring this part of Wales. You're just 30 minutes’ drive from the Severn Bridge and so close to Raglan that you’ll have views of the castle walls. The Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheinog) are less than 10 miles to the west, and the Wye Valley is closer than that. It goes without saying that this place is perfect for those who enjoy the great outdoors, and this self-contained glamping hideaway does a fabulous job of immersing you in it while providing all the home comforts you need.
This shepherd's hut is well-equipped, well-decorated and at the high-end of glamping, with everything you’d expect from a holiday cottage, albeit on a smaller scale. It has its own compact kitchenette and an en-suite shower and loo, a double bed, a dining table and a log burner to keep you warm. There’s underfloor heating too, plus mains electricity, running water and WiFi. The added advantage here is what’s outside the French doors. Fling them wide and you find you’re in a paddock that’s reserved just for you, with outdoor seating, a fire pit and those far-reaching rural views.
It’s a perfectly relaxing place to simply “be”, but of course, the mountains of the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park and the Wye Valley are a strong temptation. Walking, cycling and kayaking are all good ways to explore, plus there are more castles per square mile in Monmouthshire than anywhere else in the UK. If those take your fancy, you can start at the mighty ruins of Raglan, which are only a mile away. There’s a footpath that leads almost directly there — friendly owners Karen and Dave can point you in the right direction. They’re also happy to share their well-researched list of places to eat and drink, and tips on where else to visit in the area.
