Convenience, cocktails and comfy rooms with city-style combine at The Market House in Reading. Built in a landmark, listed building that was formerly a Lloyd’s Bank, in the very centre of town, The Market House offers rooms above a bar serving cocktails, craft beer, sourdough pizza and tasty tacos courtesy of La Taqueria. In short, everything you need for a night out, including somewhere to rest your head at the end of it. Even if you aren’t in town for revelry, the location makes this a great place to stay: it’s five minutes’ walk from the train station, three minutes from Reading Abbey and handy for shops, eateries, parks and museums.
There are 24 guest rooms here, all offering great value – in fact, The Market House featured in a 'Times’ recent round-up of Best UK Hotels for under £100 a night. Even the top spot, The Suite, with its big windows and lounge area, comes in at just a cinch over that. For the money, you’ll get a room with what’s called 'city chic' by owners, The City Pub Company, which basically means iron bed frames in every room and exposed brick walls here and there, softened by colourful throws, cushions and textured wall hangings. The usual hotel amenities are there too, with a couple of welcome additions: a Nespresso machine for morning coffee and a yoga mat for daily exercise.
Downstairs, the modern but industrial feel you find in the bedrooms is amplified in the Market Hall, a huge open-plan restaurant and bar where you can choose from pizza, tacos, small plates and burgers throughout the day – and, on weekends, indulge in a bottomless brunch. A second bar occupies a rooftop terrace. Oh, you can also play ping pong and shuffleboard if the mood takes you. The City Pub Company is growing a network of pubs in cities and market towns across the UK which promise to retain individuality whilst delivering great character, fantastic beer, delicious food and excellent service. They seem to have nailed that here.
