We love this successful update of one of Cumbria’s most historic inns as one of the region’s best eating and drinking spots. It’s one of its best places to stay, too, with 7 en-suite guest rooms in calming colours, with Herdwick wool carpets, stylish furnishings and fabrics and cool, updated bathrooms that manage to raise eyebrows and soothe aches at the same time. All rooms have wifi, tea and coffee, and toiletries, and one room has a double jacuzzi. There is also a cabin for rent, a motorhome site and a large self-catering house – Stanley House (where you can also rent individual rooms) – and the pub itself is as cosy as can be. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll want to try something from the extremely eclectic menu, which ranges from pizzas and inventive snacks to burgers, Middle Eastern shawarmas and an array of more traditional local dishes like ‘Cumbrian Tattie Pot’. It’s a beautifully peaceful spot, with high mountains all around, at the top of Eskdale and the bottom of Hardknott Pass, and at the foot of Scafell Pike.
