The Hotel du Vin properties are known for a certain bohemian elegance – not shabby chic exactly, but with a historical informality that eschews the sleek modern lines of other boutique chains. This Tunbridge Wells property is no exception: a listed Georgian mansion with gleaming dark wood floors and a wonderfully wonky old staircase, it’s a lovely place to stay in the elegant old spa town of Tunbridge Wells. The location couldn’t be better – overlooking the sweeping green of Calverley Park, at the top of the good-looking high street and near the train station, it’s within easy walking distance of everything. There are 34 rooms, but it feels like fewer – a soothing mantle of calming luxury spreads over you the moment you enter. Rooms are comfortable and kitted out with all the luxurious touches you’d expect – towelling robes, cool toiletries, plush bedding, fancy coffee machines. If you need a lot of space it is worth paying a little extra to get a larger room, especially if you’re staying more than one night. The candlelit bistro is an atmospheric spot to enjoy French-inspired brasserie food, accompanied, of course, by a very good wine list, and on sunny evenings, sitting out on the terrace and overlooking the grounds – complete with vineyard – you could almost imagine yourself in rural France.
