Though the Plough – set in rural north Kent near the little creekside town of Faversham – is a great place to savour a pint of well-kept real ale, it’s the food that makes it really special. Nothing fussy, nothing forced, just good, tasty dishes made from local produce and the freshest seasonal ingredients. People come from all over the county to eat at this unassuming foodie hotspot, and as befits its popularity, it’s a good idea to book a table, especially for weekend evenings and Sunday lunch. The menu changes all the time, but you might start with mussels steamed in Biddenden cider, Kentish asparagus and crispy duck egg, or a smoked haddock scotch egg, before tucking into roasted shoulder of saltmarsh lamb, or a preserved tomato and smoked Applewood custard tart served with nettles and leaves. Desserts, in the best British tradition, are delish – rhubarb and ginger trifle, perhaps, or a simple plate of local cheeses As for the beer, the local brews are all worth trying; for a uniquely Kentish experience, why not enjoy a pint of Whitstable Brewery’s dark and delicious Oyster Stout, available here on draught. On summer afternoons you can enjoy them at tables on the green itself, or in the grassy back garden (complete with clucking chickens). The rooms are comfortable and spacious with or without breakfast, your choice. I know what I would do! The Plough Inn is a certified site for Camping and Caravan members, the grounds will take up to four mobile homes or you could pitch your tent.
