Situated in a highly under-visited corner of the Lakes, and great for a hideaway stay, the Kirkstile Inn is a sympathetically restored 400-year-old pub and brewery, specialising in great food and drink and terrific accommodation, with 8 guest rooms both upstairs and in a nearby annexe. The rooms in the main building have been modernised but retain their old beams and plaster walls, plus there are a number of more contemporary premium rooms, along with 2 self-contained family suites that can sleep up to 2 adults and 2 children; one room even has a 4-poster. All the rooms are simply but stylishly furnished and come with flatscreen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities and up-to-date en-suite bathrooms. It’s a terrific location too, with picturesque Loweswater just a step away, and the peak of Melbreak towering above both the lake and inn. Climb up that and you’ll have earned a decent night’s sleep and a choice of dishes from the inn’s hearty menu, featuring local lamb and good steaks, which goes down well with a pint of their own Loweswater Gold!
