The romantic, secluded church of St Gwrhai, deep in the countryside of Mid Wales, is a perfect space for peaceful reflection. But it's also a uniquely comfortable place to stay, accessible by way of the Church' Champing scheme, which make it possible to stay overnight in historic churches all over the country. This tiny, charming church sits in the Upper Severn river Valley, a short drive away from one of Wales' undiscovered gems, the breathtaking Cambrian mountains, and amid multiple footpaths, trails and also cycle routes, making it the perfect place to explore the Great Welsh Outdoors.
Walkers and hikers especially love St Gwrhai’s proximity to the many local walks the area has to offer, including the canal path from the nearby village of Newtown to Welshpool, the nearby Severn Way long-distance path, which runs 215 miles all the way to Bristol, and of course the Cambrian Mountains themselves, which are home to all manner of hikes, challenging and otherwise. National Cycle Route 81 also passes nearby, and the region as a whole – and the Cambrian Mountains especially – plays host to some of the darkest skies in Europe. There are also a number of places where you can try your hand at canoeing.
The church hall next door has a well-equipped kitchen including a cooker, kettle, microwave and fridge, as well as a toilet, and nearby Newtown has a variety of places to buy food, as well as some takeaway options. You may be pleased to know that church is also dog-friendly – just as well given the amount of walkies on offer nearby!
