A glorious luxury treehouse for couples in the heart of Wales
Wales is in many ways the home of glamping, home to a multitude of glamping spots, some of which become more diverse and more elaborate every year. Nowhere is this more true than at Oaklands Glamping in rural mid-Wales, an adults-only glamping site whose ‘Heartwood’ treehouse is designed for couples looking for the ultimate in comfort while still celebrating the Great Outdoors. Because Heartwood is a strikingly modern treehouse that is as fascinating as it is luxurious.
Step inside to discover a king-sized bed with Hypnos mattress and Egyptian cotton bedding, a bathroom with a beautiful walk-in rain shower and – we kid you not! – underfloor heating. The real treat, though, is the bedroom's enormous freestanding bath, complete with designer toiletries and fluffy towels. There are more small, thoughtful touches everywhere you turn – a bathroom mirror, handcrafted from driftwood collected on the beaches of North Wales, a comfy leather sofa with a flatscreen TV, a wood-fired hot tub to keep you warm on chilly evenings. And, last but not least a fully-fitted kitchen with Welsh slate worktops , an oven, hob and dishwaher, even a wine cooler and Nespresso machine!
A huge oak tree has been incorporated into the decking and at night its gentle embrace creates a magical atmosphere – you're not technically in a tree, but you are right up there among the leaves and branches, with buzzards and kites circling above, and it’s hard to imagine a more romantic place to watch the sun set.
Oaklands has a couple of safari tents, too, which aren't quite at the level of the treehouse but still qualify as luxury glamping, and the site itself is heavenly, with nothing to disturb you in this remote hilltop setting beyond birdsong and the distant rush of the Banwy River. Beyond the site, attractions include the Welshpool and Llanfair steam railway, Lake Vyrnwy, medieval Powis Castle and Pistyll Rhaeadr, the highest waterfall in Wales. An hour's drive can take you to Snowdonia National Park or to the coast at Aberdovey. You may, however, find it hard to leave your treehouse hideaway, and feel there's really no need to go anywhere at all!
