Glamping at the Brew

UK England South West England Somerset Shepton Mallet

Oakhill, Radstock, Somerset BA3 5HT

A uniquely peaceful Somerset glamping site set around two ponds in its own beautiful wildlife garden

Deep in rural Somerset on the edge of a quiet village close to the Mendip Hills, there's a little corner of the countryside that's known locally as 'The Brew'. Created 200 years ago by a local brewery, it has at its heart an old pleasure garden, with an extraordinary collection of ponds, waterfalls and a grotto that is gradually being brought back to life by its new owners, who are aiming to  develop it into a modern sanctuary for wildlife – buzzards and kingfishers, butterflies and bats, even a family of a deer. At the same time they are making part of it into a uniquely peaceful, partially off-grid glamping site that is available for exclusive hire – 'Glamping at The Brew'.

The off-grid part of the site is made up of six luxury Lotus bell-tents, each with a proper king-sized bed, with duvets, blankets, towels, a hot water bottle and chests of drawers for your clothes; outside each tent there is a table and two chairs, a kettle and mugs for coffee and tea. Compost loos and cabin showers are close at hand, though a morning dip in the spring-fed ponds is a refreshing way to start the day!

There is also a large and very comfortable yurt in the old walled garden a couple of minutes' walk from the tents, which makes a great communal space. There's more privacy here and on -grid facilities, with your own shower room and two proper flushing loos. The yurt also has sofas and chairs, indoor and outdoor dining tables, bluetooth and wifi, and, believe it or not, its own vinyl collection and turntable. There's an outdoor kitchen and also a garden room which provides space for reading, games and general loafing about, with art materials and binoculars on hand. It also has a double sofa-bed and can also be used as an extra bedroom. The garden has a barbecue and pizza oven, a firepit and swing, and a large canopy provides a gathering-space complete with beanbags and cushions.

The Brew is perfect for families with older children or groups of friends who want to enjoy a chilled break amid nature. The ponds are quite large and on two levels, with a waterfall between them: the lower one is being developed for wildlife, while the upper is strictly for pleasure, with five inflatable kayaks for guest use and two paddleboards for hire, too.

Finally you can stroll to the nearby Oakhill Inn, named after the original brewery, which serves delicious food and does takeaways if you can't be bothered to stir from your garden perch. It's also worth knowing that just half a mile away lies the ancient woodland of Beacon Hill, with views towards Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset Levels.

Suitable For

The site is on the edge of a quiet village rather than in a remote location so parties or noisy gatherings are not possible. It is perfect for families with older children or groups of friends who want a chilled, nature friendly time with a touch of luxury and a gently creative & self caring retreat. We want you to enjoy the sound of birdsong and running water, your own conversation and laughter and to maintain the peaceful, relaxed setting.

It is for those who want to taste and explore Somerset.

We cannot accommodate pets due to the wildlife on the land and children must be 8 years or over because of natural hazards such as deep water and a high, unguarded cliff edge. The site is unsuitable for younger children and for people who would find uneven ground a problem.

We ask you to leave the walled garden by 10:30pm in respect of our neighbours and keep noise on the campsite to a low level after 11:00pm.
