A beautiful Somerset glamping site with safari tents, a deckhouse and holiday cottage - and your own personal hot tub!

Positioned in a wonderful middle-of-nowhere location on the edge of Exmoor National Park, there's nothing middling about Middle Stone Farm. It offers top-notch luxury glamping in six safari lodges, along with a comfortable cabin and a holiday cottage. It has an on-site licensed shop offering home-cooked meals and local produce including Somerset ciders and beers; and the farm is a tourist attraction in itself: a 32-acre patch of west Somerset complete with rare-breed pigs and sheep, goats, chickens and alpacas – a farm tour with a tractor ride will show you the lot. There’s also table tennis, badminton and football as well as two children’s play areas, and overall an unpretentious, backcountry atmosphere that's ideal for couples' breaks and family holidays.

The safari lodges are at the upper end of the luxury scale, fully kitted out with everything you need – and a spaciousness and sense of adventure that is hard to beat. The kitchen has a wood-burning stove to cook on and a small fridge, plus there's an en-suite shower and wash room, and a sun deck with a private hot tub. Each lodge sleeps up to six people, with a king bed, a pair of singles and a quirky 'cupboard bed' – a two-person cubbyhole that children (and adults) adore. There's no WiFi but a good 4G signal.

But the accommodation isn't confined to glamping, The cute Deckhouse Cabin and colourful Stable Cottage are more secluded, more solid and open all year when the area is quieter still. The Deckhouse is a white-washed pavilion-style cabin in its own corner of the farm, popular with couples and open for stays all year round.  It sleeps up to four in a king-sized bed and separate small bunk room, while the retro feel of the open-plan living space makes a nice contrast to the modern shower room and the wood-burning stove. There is a private wood-burning hot tub near the fire pit and barbecue area outside, and glorious views of open farmland.

Stable Cottage sleeps sleeps 2 adults and 2 young children and is furnished with a mix of traditional and contemporary furniture – comfy sofas, colourful rugs and pictures, along with a slate floor and beams in the open-plan living room. It too has a wood-burning stove, along with a modern kitchen, and uncluttered bedrooms with brass bedsteads and colourful quilts. Outside there’s a small raised patio with private hot tub, seating area and barbecue and views around the farm. The cottage has WiFi throughout and heating is provided by the farm’s biomass boiler.

If you’re here for a weekend, the appeal of the on-site attractions might just stop you from exploring the countryside around, but that it be a pity to miss the ponies and moorlands of Exmoor national park, the subtropical gardens of Dunster Castle, the picturesque fishing port of Porlock Weir and the fossil treasure-trove at Klive beach. The answer of course is to forget about a weekend and to book yourself in for a week instead!

Facilities

We're friendly and welcoming and enjoy sharing our local knowledge with guests.  West Somerset is quite special as it is off the tourist track and really beautiful.  Although remote, we’re easily accessible, only 30 minutes to the M5 and the coast is nearby.  For guests interested in animals we offer a weekly farm tour during the glamping season.

Suitable For

We're very family friendly with two play areas, lots of animals to meet, meadows to run free and it's not overcrowded.  The cabin is secluded and designed with couples in mind.  We have a farm shop on site with lots of local products and we run very popular farm tours through the glamping season.  Perfect for family holidays and couple breaks, please note we are not hosting adult groups at the moment.

Nearby

West Somerset is relatively unknown, our local beaches are never crowded even in August, we're only 3 miles from Exmoor, the least visited National Park in the country, it's incredibly beautiful and unspoilt here.  It's also a very friendly part of the West Country and you can be sure of a warm welcome.

Food & Drink

There are two pubs in nearby Wiveliscombe and many good country pubs on Exmoor and The Quantocks.  Porlock Weir has lots of good independent options including oysters and noodles on the harbour, Blue Anchor has a family friendly beach cafe.

Open

Open all year.

Family Friendly

You don't need to go on safari to stay in a safari tent these days. But with alpacas, goats and rare breed pigs and sheep, you can make a very British safari of your own at Middle Stone Farm. Binoculars aren't even required.

Pricing

Safari tents cost from £120 a night, the cabin and cottage cost from £95 a night.

Enjoyable and relaxing stay, would return

Friendly owners, lovely rural location and a beautifully furnished and equipped cottage. Our stay coincided with some of the worst storms and flooding of the Winter but this really didn't detract from our break. The cottage was comfortable, cosy and big enough for us to enjoy a day relaxing indoors with 2 young children...yes relaxing!!! Plenty to do and places to explore in the area. The farm produce was delicious, bacon and eggs amazing and we arrived to a wonderful home baked loaf and the most exquisite chocolate brownies. The kids enjoyed wandering after the chickens in the farmyard in between rainstorms. The only downside was that we didn't get to enjoy the hot tub as much as we would have liked due to the storms. Would absolutely recommend a stay here and we plan to come back.

Response from Middle Stone Farm

Thank you very much Liz and Mike for your kind review,  we're very pleased you had a happy stay despite the winter storm.  Do come and stay again, maybe try a safari lodge in the summer, they all have private hot tubs too.  Best wishes Catherine, Middle Stone Farm
