St Mary the Virgin

High on a hill, a half a mile outside the Devon village of Walkhampton, the church of St Mary the Virgin occupies an ancient site. It was built long before the village was founded in the river valley below, which accounts for its separate position. Another curious feature is that it faces northeast, rather than due east like most churches; it's an alignment that also points exactly to the local landmark of Gipsy Rock, and the point of sunrise on the longest day, hinting at more pagan roots.

Whether you are a believer or not, the church, with its unique four-pronged tower, makes a uniquely comfortable and well located place to stay – in a beautiful position right on the western border of Dartmoor. Walkhampton is a pretty village and has its own pub, the 17th-century Walkhampton Inn, which does excellent food, and you're also well placed for walks on the moor which start just above the village.

As for the church, it comes equipped with an accessible loo and kitchen facilities, with kettle and fridge, though as with most champing churches, you will need to bring your own bedding. Buckfast Abbey and the market town of Tavistock are not far away, but you may be happy enough to just pootle around the village,  walking and relaxing and making the most of this unbeatable location.
