The Windmill Suffolk
Everyone loves a windmill, so we were especially excited to discover this converted historic corn mill which towers over the rural fields of Suffolk. A recent labour of love that sits at the end of the garden of Natalie Roberts and her very handy husband Steve, it's one of the last windmills to be built in England, and is a stunning conversion which has been shortlisted for a number of awards. The furniture has been curved to follow the contours of the building, and its two bedrooms, kitchen diner and top floor sitting room have been fitted out to a very high spec, making it quirky as well as a very contemporary place to stay. It is a perfect rural escape from London – just 2 miles north of the tourist honeypot of Lavenham but a world away in terms of peace and quiet; and while it’s nice to have the restaurants, cafés and timbered delights of Lavenham so close by, it's even better to retire to your rooftop eyrie at the end of the day, where you can enjoy the 360-degree views from its supremely comfy top-floor room, complete with curved sofas, telescopes for star-gazing and a wine fridge to keep the traipsing up and down stairs to a minimum. There’s also a 47” TV (curved, naturally), should you get bored with the views.
There truly are worse ways of spending the evening than gazing out over the Suffolk countryside with a glass of wine as the sun goes down – and down below there are two highly contemporary double bedrooms, with a sumptuous bathroom in between, well stocked with Elemis toiletries and a gorgeous oval bath and rainfall shower in which to enjoy them. A ground floor room completes the picture, kitted out as a curvy kitchen-diner with all the high-end utilities you could possibly need – plus there’s an outdoor terrace for a lazy start to the day before trekking off across the fields. This part of Suffolk is very rural and full of footpaths, walks and cycle routes, and you're very well based not just for Lavenham but also for Bury St Edmunds and the nearby attractions of Constable Country. Rural bliss - and although it's hard to believe, you’re less than a 2-hour drive from London.
The Owner Says
We like to think The Windmill Suffolk is a cool place, and have lovingly restored it over the past 2 years. Wishing to be sympathetic to both the original heritage of the building as a working mill and to ensure the final build would appeal to the modern tourist wanting a one of a kind haven we have created a relaxing retreat in a contemporary and unique building.
The Windmill Suffolk is proud to have won both the RICS East of England 2017 Tourism and Leisure Category and the National Roofing Awards 2016-Fully Supported Metal Roofing Category.
We were also finalists in the Structural Timber Awards 2016 and British Woodworking Federation 2016. The Windmill Suffolk also won a commendation at the RIBA Suffolk Design Awards May 2017 and was shortlisted for the 2017 RIBA East Awards.
