Walk the Walls

York City Walls

With some parts dating from Roman times, York’s city walls are the longest in England. You can access them pretty easily from any point in the centre and walk the circuit, which will take around two hours if you walk slowly. Along the way you’ll come across the four main “bars” or gates, originally used as toll gates to restrict medieval traffic, as well as a handful of crumbling towers, integral elements of York’s architectural heritage.
