The Saint

A new lease of life for an old St Andrews institution, the newly renovated Saint is a terrific bar and restaurant with two surprises – a fabulous hidden-gem drinks garden, as well as four guest rooms if you fancied a night of dining and drinking. The bedrooms are colour-coordinated boutique beauties, and can be configured as doubles or twins ­ – they come with great bathrooms, a Nespresso machine and a wall-mounted flatscreen. Breakfast in the morning gets rave reviews, and nothing is too much trouble.

As for the restaurant, it’s a modern Scottish take on the gastropub classics, so fish and chips, pies, mac n’ cheese, burgers and grills, but also Cullen skink, haggis croquettes and Shetland mussels. And the garden is an absolute delight, a real suntrap that you can call your own at any time of the day, from morning coffee to bedtime nightcaps. Out and about in town meanwhile, you’re just ten minutes on foot from the Cathedral, even closer to the university, so it’s a good location all round.
