The Royal Oak, Tetbury

A hop and a skip from Tetbury’s engaging centre, this handsome 18th-century tavern is now a winner for funky charm, community spirit and eco friendliness. The heartbeat of the enterprise is a long saloon with an art deco upright piano, a reconditioned juke box and upcycled furnishings, such as the bar fashioned from old church panelling. The Royal Oak tends to be buzzing - locals pop in for a pint, enjoy well-priced meals and join live music events here. Food (Thai fish burgers, roasted coconut and lime salmon and always a choice of vegan dishes) is also served in the upstairs dining room, a wonderfully atmospheric space complete with magnificent exposed beams and wrought-iron chandeliers. In summer an Airstream trailer offers world street food on the garden terrace. There’s a separate annexe for the stylish accommodation - a former barn with a skittles alley has been beautifully revamped to contain six bedrooms set over two floors. These have retro-chic furnishings and are decorated in quiet cream, blues and browns. The largest and most sumptuous is the Oak Lodge suite with leather armchairs and capacity to sleep four.
